Namibia’s 5 Best Off-Roading Trails

The 4×4 off-roading trails in Namibia are some of the best – and most challenging – in the world. The Namib Naukluft Park offers steep, rocky climbs, while the Kalahari boasts immensely fun sand dunes and sweltering heat to enjoy. You could even try your hand at slipping along the mud tracks of the Etosha National Park, where you can see a beautiful array of wildlife as well.

There is a 4×4 trail for every driver in Namibia and Southern Africa as a whole, as long as you have a vehicle that can handle this tricky terrain. Here are Namibia’s 5 most breath taking trails to check out on your next visit when you aren’t busy trying to win cash prizes with games!

#5: Kalahari-Namib Eco 4×4 Route

The Kalahari-Namib Eco 4×4 Route is ideal for the most adventurous of drivers. The open route can last anywhere between 2 and 10 days, and offers tons of trails and terrains to choose from. It spans across the Namib and Kalahari deserts, as well as the Great and Small Karas Mountains, the Tiras Mountains, and the picturesque Fish River Canyon.

#4: Messum Crater 4×4 Trail

This 250km trail covers the C34 past Lagunen Mountain and the Cape Cross. At the crater you can explore ancient cave paintings and village settlements and even visit the local saltpan. The trail later joins up with the Messum River, offering views of the gorgeous Henties Bay. Over and above this, the Messum Crater Trail is studded with significant archaeological sites left by the nomadic Damara tribes of old.

#3: Isabis 4×4 Trail

Isabis means ‘beautiful to the eye’ to the Nama people, and that is exactly what you can expect from this trail. It is based in the stunning Gamsberg region of Namibia, and covers steep plateaus that offer panoramic mountain views, deep gorges, and untouched nature views.

The trail spans 130km from the Isabis farms to the Gaub River, and even includes a series of natural rock pools to explore. This is also an easier 4×4 route for beginners, although optional black routes are available for thrill seekers as well. Remember to book in advance for this adventure.

#2: Topnaar 4×4 Trail

Does sliding around on sand dunes sound like your idea of a good time? The Topnaar trail is a 6-day off-roading adventure that starts at Luderitz and takes you across the sands of Namibia’s Skeleton Coast and Walvis Bay. This is a guided trail only, but the cost is well worth the experience.

#1: Namib Naukluft Park Trails

If you love off-roading, the Namib Naukluft 4×4 Adventure Trail is for you. This Namibian gem features 4×4 off-roading routes and trails that will take your breath away. The trails were created by early driving pioneers, and are designed to test your off-roading skills and teach you some new ones at the same time.

This is one of the hardest unguided routes in the world, spanning 73km and taking around 2 full days to complete. If you choose to tackle this steep mountain terrain, come prepared!
